3JH2E Transmission Output Coupler

The output coupler nut has fallen off our 3JH2E transmission twice. These photos show you how to tighten and replace the nut. When this happens, Yanmar service dealers require the transmission to be removed and the nut to be tightened to specs. Yanmar also requires the nut to be "caulked" which means to dent the end of it into the shaft's keyway. Caulking keeps the nut from backing off. From my discovery, this dent is NOT deep enough. Since this dent cannot be applied while the transmission is ON the boat, I used LOCKTITE on the threads this time. My previous repair lasted a full year when we ran home from Maine to Rock Hall, MD, with the nut just tightened with 90 degree bent needle nose pliers. This time, I made a custom tool to tighten the nut and was able to apply much more pressure.
