Hi, IP'ers,

This thread appears to have no recent traffic, so I'll chime in...

If you're a geek and don't mind separate-sourcing it all, and then configuring it so it will work in your application without having to do geek things to make a connection happen, you can buy the parts and put it together for a few bux saved.

However, if you want just to tie the provided pigtail into your house power (right off the batteries, from lower than you'll ever take them to higher than you'll ever charge them is fine for this setup), go to www.islandtimepc.com and order Bob Stewart's (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)$239 (+16 shipping) package, which includes a 1000mw bullet set up to plug and play.

Mouse over the WiFi section to see applications on three boats, mine included, along with site scans from two of them. No financial interest in this company other than the owner saved me from perdition with some other vendor's junk, before I was even a customer - so I bought from him. I've since gotten smart enough to DI(m)Y, but there's no way I'd not buy from him with all the support I've gotten from him.

An ex-full-time cruiser who moved ashore to care for his elderly mother, he's since moved to near Pensacola; you can see him at some of the shows, now. I do seminars (transcript available, with appropriate vendor links, including Hayden's setup for those using cell connex, somewhere else in this site in the documents section) in Georgetown, where I'm currently anchored, and when folks see what I do with my setup, many orders result from seeing what I have. I get letters thanking me for leading them to him, after they'd wrestled with various other flavors of not-as-good-or-simple setups.

A couple of years ago, I (before being kicked off) sent a post to Bruce' mail list while under sail 7 miles south of Staniel Cay, picking up Sampson Cay's (then) open site, which is routine performance for my rig. In Marsh Harbour, I used one of three sites which were respectively, 6, 8 and 12 miles away...

I ran my cat5 directly in the mast 4 years ago; so far, so good. YMMV...

"Believe me, my young friend, there is *nothing*-absolutely nothing-half so
much worth doing as simply messing, messing-about-in-boats; messing about in
boats-or *with* boats.

In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's
the charm of it.

Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your
destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get
anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in
particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and
you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not."
