Night Sailing on Lake Michigan ?? was created by csmith22
I have just started sailing my 27' Island Packet out of New Buffalo, MI on daysails. Wonderful. But I am starting to think about longer trips north, overnights, etc.

Can anyone tell me how safe or unsafe it is to sail Lk Mich at nightime? I have the requisite lights in rigging, etc. but not much experience sailing at night since being a teenager.

Anyone have experience with this? Advice? Many thanks.

I have about 20000 miles on the Great Lakes in my IP350. I sail out of Cheboygan, Micigna.

I have been down the Michigan Shore of Lake Michigan twice.

You will likely find no commercial traffic near the Michigan shore. A couple of ferries cross the lake from Lundington but their schedule is is to find. You will find fishing charters leaving most ports early in the mornings.

Fog can always be a problem so if you don't have radar, have GPS way-points ready for harbor entrances that you will pass. Weather forecasting is quite good.

Have fun over nights are a big treat for me.
