Fixed Prop Vs Feathering Prop was created by Bobarosa Del Mar
I am considering replacing the fixed prop on my 2006 IP 485 with a Max Prop feathering prop. I cannot decide between a Max Prop V.P. Fast or a Max Prop Ecowind where the V.P. Fast would less complex given that it does not have the automated adjustable pitch system based on their patented spring design. Does anyone in this community have some experience with either Max Prop version and do you have any recommendations regarding either prop's reliability? Please respond and thanks!

We have a Max Prop Classic three blade on our 2001 IP420. We bought the boat in 2009 and had it serviced at that time. This winter we pulled the boat for the first time since then. The prop was in excellent condition, requiring only a lube and cleanup with a wire wheel. The prop makes a difference in drag and vibration. Running from Annapolis to Herring Bay last week, first sail of the season, we turned off the engine and sailed for a while and noticed a slight vibration. I kicked the throttle into reverse for a second to fold the blades and the boat smoothed out and picked up speed. It was noticeable. Normally you wouldn't have to do the trick with the throttle as the blades lay flat when you go to neutral. I think the prop may have been tight from fresh lube and a long winter rest. We're very pleased with the Max Prop and haven't had any problems in three seasons. I have heard of other folks having problems and would suggest keeping your fixed prop as a spare. Just in case.
