Gouge down to the Glass

I managed to hit something in the East River (NY) that put a gouge into the hull, just below the deck.  It is about 3/4 x 4 inch in size and seems to just barely penetrate the glass fibers.

I suppose we use polyester gelcoat repair material for something like this?
I only need a small amount of material.  Have folks had good luck with the kits that the marine supply stores sell? 
How hard is it to get a reasonable color match?

Is this a bigger repair than I am picturing?
