Fiberglass Rub Rail Repair and Excessive Rust on Stainless Rail

Hi All,

Pat here on SV Makarios, Hull 17 of IP485. The edge of my fiberglass or composite rubrail got under the edge of a 2x6 at a dock. During the season, we noticed that we had rust around 20-30 screws on the rubrail, and wonder what is the cause, as it is pretty pervasive through the composite? Is it inferior screws that need to be changed out to 316 stainless? What solution is suggested for removing the rust?

We have a 2007 IP 485 right next to us, and they only have a few screws exhibiting rust.

Also, is Bondo an appropriate solution to try and fair back in a suitable edge to mimic the surrounding radius? Will it adhere to the composite?

Thanks,

Pat
