I have been alerted to this excessive heat issue on these IP 420 and the IP 440 This was reported in Boat US magazine and the IP 420 that burned was named SANDPIPER. You can read all about this VERY SCARY and sad situation on their blog here:
They posted.... On the morning of May 13, 2016 Sandpiper sailed out of la Paz marina with Ed & Annette as crew and began a 250 mile voyage to her home port of Mazatlan, Mexico. Weather reports predicted little or no wind crossing of the sea of Cortez so anticipating lots of motoring, we topped off our fuel at Palmira marina before leaving la Paz. Perhaps it was leaving on Friday the 13, bad luck, or maybe just fate, but this was to be Sandpiper's final voyage.

In regards to an article in Boat US magazine,Apri/May 2017, it mentioned a
fire aboard The Sandpiper, hull and manufacturer date unknown. This fire
was discovered under berth cushion in back cabin, near exhaust riser. I
have written in the past about the turbo charged Yanmar turbo engine.
Hayden has written several articles about the risers being stainless or
steel including diagrams. However, my research has found that the exhaust
riser on the 420 and 440 models were custom made from stainless, for these
boats only. My 420 was purchased NEW and was on the mailing list from the
factory for any service bulletins. Any 420 or 440, bought used or
previously owned, may not have received this important service bulletin,
dated Feb. 20,2012. Enclosed/attached is a copy of the service report
stating a potential fire hazard. I'm not sure this is the cause of The
Sandpipers fire, but it would warrant owners of 420's or 440's to check
the exhaust area and change their impellers, YEARLY, to maximize water
flow through the risers. Also, clean your heat exchangers regularly. We
had a replacement riser custom-made by the original manufacturer as a
"backup" when needed.

I remember looking at the location of the exhaust riser on the 420 in relation to the aft berth frame and it dawned on me that the fireproof jacket on the top of the riser is already totally flattened due to pressure from the removable access opening cover under the mattress. Whomever designed it this way and whomever let this into production must be hold accountable. Not only does the exhaust riser contact wooden structure, it also vibrates when the engine is running, thus slowly wearing out the fireproofing material. This is a ticking time bomb!If this was in auto industry they would have recalled all affected boats and had the dealers replace those parts with the better designed ones free of charge. The bulletin conveniently refers to exhaust risers as to wearable parts which they very well might be, but putting an exhaust manifold of any engine in contact with wood is a grave design mistake which endangers lives. I am surprised no class action law suit has yet been filed against the boat manufacturer in this matter. Some lawyer really need to look into this closely,
I had a new exhaust riser made for my IP420 by Suncoast Specialities (727-584-3252) in Largo FL and now I am looking for the thermal blanket to had it wrapped after installation. Does anyone know the part number or what to substitute it with? Also have anyone installed automatic Halone fire extinguisher in the engine compartment and what cu ft did you size it for?
