Waterline Adjustment was created by Galileo
Hello,

Anybody ever go through adjusting their waterline?

Now that I have loaded Galileo down with Davits, Wind Generator, Solar Panel, and place Dinghy on Davits and then fill everything (water, fuel, storage bins with food, tools, etc.) I notice that she sits in the water, near the Stern, about halfway into the Bootstrip.

Not that that's a problem, but I notice that at the end of the last two seasons now I get a lot of crud up in this area, and some barnacles.

My thought is to mask the Bootstrip at about midship where it is the thinest, and continue this thickness back to the Stern. Then, get a suitable color of the Krylon Fusion paint for Plastic, as used by others in the IPYOA, and after prepping the Bootstrip paint, paint the Hull color strip back to the Stern. Then raise the Bottom Paint line upwards from this midship point, prep the remaining Bootstrip paint, and then apply Bottom Paint. The way I see it, the Rudder is entirely painted with Bottom Paint anyway, and this raised waterline will just blend right in with the Rudder's bottom paint and you probably wouldn't even be able to discern a difference.

Then that should cure my crud accumulation problem.

Of course I could go overboard every so often and clean the existing waterline.

Any thoughts on adjusting one's waterline would be appreciated.

Thanks,

We did this exact process to IP27 Cinnamon and I can share some challenges. First issue is getting this straight and level. That is not easy. With the boat out of the water, rent a laser transit and place this midships about 10 feet away. Then mark the bow and mark the stern where you want the line to be. Then turn on the spinning laser transit and tilt the tripod and legs until you get it hitting the bow mark and the stern mark. Walk down along the boat and place small tape markers on this line about 12-24" apart. Start your masking tape at one mark, then pull out about 10 feet of masking tape, stand back and pull tight, then slowly move in towards the boat getting it to stick at your 12"-24" markers. If you only have an arms length of tape pulled out then the line will be very wavy due to the short use of tape. Pulling out 10 feet and keeping it tight is a great way to go as this give you a long line and you slowly move it into the boat. The laser transit gave you the straight and level markings, but applying the tape is also a trick to get it level. Transits can be rented at most tool rental shops.

Here is a link to our photos of this job, look a the bottom of this page where we sold Cinnamon.

Photo of tape pre-paint job. Note: The yard that painted this first, really messed it up, and we had to redo it.

Hayden,

Good inputs.

Whereas you raised the entire waterline, bootstipe, intermediate hull color line and then bottom paint, I don't think I will have to go through that entire process. I have plenty of waterline in the front, down past midship and then because of loading Galileo sits slightly above the bottom paint in the last ten (10) feet or so. It appears that I can start forward of this point and by maintaining the width of the Bootstrip at this point and running that thickness toward the rear I can then raise the Hull color strip and also the waterline back in the area.

What color did you use for the Hull color strip, the same IP Hull color, or some other? I don't seem to notice the IP Hull color in any of the selections Krylon Plastic paint offers.

We took the easy way out. We moved the bottom paint line up enough so that we had it where needed into the existing boot stripe. No need in my opinion to try to make a gelcoat colored strip between the bottom paint and boot stripe. May IP's that we see out here had done the same thing - jut raise the bottom paint line as needed.
