Removing painted name from Transom was created by ErBrown
Howdy Folks,

I'm not sure where this fits. But my wife and I would like to rename our new (to us) IP40 and unfortunately the name is painted on the transom. The hailing port is vinyl so no problem there but what have others used to remove painted on names.

I've seen threads on other sites recommending everything from Easy Off oven cleaner to wet sanding. Given that special IP tan gelcoat, I thought it might be best to ask here to make sure we don't cause ourselves any unnecessary headaches.

Thanks in advance,
Erin

We used easy off oven cleaner and a scotch brute fine pad. Its easy, does no damage. After its off, compound and wax then stick on your new name.

Congrats on your new ip40. That is a dream yacht!

I concur with Hayden. Tried a bunch of different solvents with no luck because I didn't believe the oven cleaner really worked. Turns out it works like a champ. We did exactly the same on one of our previous boats. Depending on how long the name has been on, you may have to work with a shadow on the gelcoat. The guidance I received on that from a local fiberglass guy involved wetsanding with very fine paper (1000 grit) which I was not confident in doing. Instead I used a rubbing compound, followed by a polishing compound, followed by 3M wax/restore.
