shavings and glue??? was created by gerryandnancy
Read here or elsewhere that someone had great luck using shavings and another substance as a filler. We damaged a bit of wood on the outside teak and need to do a repair.

thanks for any help you can offer. Nancy and Gerry

The topic you may be referring to the filling of a screw hole with a wood shaving so the screw will bite. If you have a dent, large chip or chunk out of the gunwale the you would have to scarf in or cut in a new piece of teak. If it is a small dent, then I would simply sand the dent with 80 grit then 120 grit until it was blended in and a bit of a dished out area. How bad is the dent/chip?

The chip on the gunwale is about 1 1/2" long and 1/8" to 1/4" deep. What do you think of using an outdoor wood filler, staining it to best match the teak, sanding and varnishing over? The entire gunwale has already been scraped and sanded and is ready for varnishing. Nancy and Gerry

A small chip like that should be fine filled in, especially since you are putting a surface finish over top of it. If it is not too deep. 1/8" to 1/4" I would look closely at sanding it down or dishing it outwith the corner of the orbital sander and maybe that would work as well.

It all depends on on where this is and if a dent there will look bad. Obviously the best way to go is a filler and get it flat and level again before you varnish.

I often collect saw dust / sander dust from a specific piece of wood that I'm working on. If I have issues such as you describe, jerryandnancy, I can mix that dust with a small amount of wood glue, to use as a filler. Because the filler came from the same piece of wood, I've found that the color matches are more exact. Disclaimer - I've never done this with teak.
