Wood rot under stainless rub rail was created by cat30
Ive had a leak on the starboard side of my 1988 IP31 i have not been able to locate. Recently on facebook someone showed some wood damage to the caprail and under the stainless rub rail, so im going to take a look at mine. If there is damage there, im wondering if i clean out the rot would 5200 be a suitable repair or would epoxy be a better solution? Thanks. Don

Hi Don,
I too had wood rot on the stern quarters of my 1999 IP380. One option if money isn't a concern, is to scarf in new teak. I cut out the rot using a wood chisel then mixed teak dust with the West system epoxy. Use a consistency of peanut butter so you don't have sags. Tape the surrounding areas, then sand to prior level. It has held up quite well.

Hey Gitgo,

Where did you source the teak dust filler?

I saved the teak dust from prior teak refinishing projects. The repair is darker than the surrounding wood, but most of it is hidden by the stainless rub rail.
If you are near a boatyard that does carpentry work, maybe you can procure some wood dust. Other fillers might work, this is what I used.
