Epifanes service coat how long it takes

I just finished a service coat on my varnish of Epifanes. Here is how long the job took broken down into tasks.

Area serviced: Bow to side gates gunwales
IP35

1. Sand with 320 grit: 30 min.
2. Tape, dust, remove gear, wipe with denatured alcohol: 45 min.
3. Brush on one coat. 60 min.
4. Clean up: 15 min.
Total time: 2 he's. 30 min

Left to do...re install gear, jib cars, strike plates, sheets. 30 min.

I am always amazed at how easy and quick a service coat goes. I also like to break the boat up into sections. By doing sections, it never is a big job.

Sections
1. Handrails
2. Eyebrows
3. Gunwales bow to gates
4. Gunwales stern to gates
5. Cockpit
6. Bow sprit

These sections take about 1-2 hours each.

When I did the entire boat at once, it took 6-8 hours per coat. This was the entire boat sanding, wiping and brushing on one coat then cleaning up.

I find it is better, when cruising to do sections at a time.

Thank you
Epifanse is a great product. Look at the day after with the rain on the new varnish!

Hayden - we're refinishing our teak and have decided to go with Epifanes. We'll be doing five coats. How do you find it holds up over time down in the islands? What's your opinion on comparing it to Cetol? Does it require more maintenance or about the same? We've been using teak oil up to now so we have nothing to compare it with. Just liked the look of Epifanes over the Cetol.

Tom and Cheri:

I used Cetol on our IP27 for ten years. I now have used Epifanes for 13 years. I see no extra effort for Epifanes once it is built up. You will need a minimum of six at least, five will not seal the wood as coat 1 is 50% coat 2 is 75% and 3-6 is 100%. So at coat five the pores are still open. It is ok for a little while but you need to get #6 on asap. I now have seven on and I am maintaining this 7th coat. It holds up well. What you will see is the top coat starts to loose its luster and this is your sign to get to it.

To maintain this just scuff it with 320, wipe it tape it and coat it. It goes so fast and it looks so good when it is finished. I prefer this over cetol because the wood always looks clear and not colored. The real work is in the build up.

It has lasted OK for us in the Islands, Bahamas and Florida winter. We have not been in the islands in the summer. It is toooooo hot, we sail back north.

PS:
Our Epifanes has sat in MD all summer, it has not been touched since Dec in Florida. Now, Oct, 10 months later, we need one service coat. I plan on doing that in the AM, 4 hours. Midship to bow both sides. 2 hours per side it takes.

Hayden - Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. I'll plan on seven coats. That's how I see myself in my old age anyway....7 coats, 3 pairs of underwear, 2 pairs of pants and a pair of shorts, no socks and a pair of those sandals made from old tires, all worn at the same time, what's left of my hair tied up in a scrawny ponytail, beard down to my belly button, living out of a VW van somewhere in the Mojave, wandering around at night wondering where I tied up my boat.
