Biscayne Bay area has much to offer the cruising boater with anchorages just off South Beach, Key Biscayne and Elliot Cay. This harbor area is very protected from the normal east winds, and when the cold fronts arrive, you can simply move into a sheltered island area for protection. Mooring Balls are available to the west at Dinner Key Marina or Coconut Grove Sailing Club, and to the east at Crandon Park State Marina. Water depths are 8-10 feet most places, and with a nice east wind, you can easily go for a beam reach sail south or north in the protected waters of Biscayne Bay.
The image below shows how to access the South Beach area and where to anchor. It also shows where the dinghy docks are and the grocery stores are located. With East winds, this is a great place to base out of for your South Beach explorations.
