IP38 swim platform was created by markrodger
I am looking to fit a swim platform on my IP38 as having spent the last three and a half weeks in Greece I think this is a necessity. I will not have access to the boat for the next month (back at work) so was wondering is someone has already had one made and has any drawings they could share or if knows of any company that has experience in making them for IP38's.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Mark:
The best swim platforms I have seen for IPs are made by KATO MARINE in Annapolis MD, USA. They have all the measurements and can ship anywhere.

If I were adding a swim platform to my IP, I would use Kato.

Here are photos of an IP38 with this platform and how it is installed.

1998 IP40. Adding swim platform. Trying to consider all options/headaches. Folding vs fixed. Lateral Space to lift dinghy engine via transom hoist. Ability to store dinghy on its side when traveling. Backing into slip. Thanks in advance for feedback.

Howdy dwilbar. I'd be interested to know what y'all decided on. We have a 40 and are considering our options for adding a platform. I like the idea of a folding platform but would be interested to know what you decided on and if you have any pictures to share.

Hayden thanks as always for the great pics. It's odd that neither Kato or the fiberglass option has any pictures or mention of swim platforms for sailboats on their sites.

Thanks,
Erin

I have the swim platform from Beachcomber Fiberglass. We are very comfortable and happy with it after four seasons in the Caribbean. Here is a link that Cochran gave me a few years ago of various pictures. plus.google.com/photos/11764406294453402.../5454520260700364449

Observations:
1. Waves from the transom are a little noisy due to minimal number of slots to release pressure. This is not really an issue.
2. We love the built in swim ladder. It is much safer having the ability to access the boat from the water if you fall in or simply forget. Plus it allows you to simply cut the folding ladder and leave it down for access to the platform. Some chips out of the powder coating after 4 seasons.
3. Bolts holding the platform may fail if not 316 stainless ($$$) due to corrosion. Also, we went oversize, they seemed too small.
4. The support brackets seem a bit small and could use a little reinforcement to stiffen them.
5. I love having no teak on the platform to maintain.
6. The color match was perfect.

Thanks for the detailed review Ejacks. I reached out to both Kato and Beachcomber last night to see about pricing and if they'd be willing to work up a mount that would allow the platform to fold up flat against the transom for offshore work or chop from the stern.

I'll let y'all know what I get back. The swim platform isn't an urgent need for us until we get a little closer to departure date but we're trying to nail down the options and prioritize the projects over the next year or so in an attempt to avoid the typical rush before casting off. Not sure that's possible, but it's going to be fun to try.

Thanks again for the feedback.

We had our platform made locally in Norfolk. Stainless frame and Plasteak. Swim ladder is underneath. Altered existing swim ladder to make stairs. Excellent job. Way cheaper than Kato.

After our first season in Greece we decided that a swim platform was a necessity. It would be great for swimming but also make stern to mooring much easier. Importing a platform from the states proved to be too expensive so we gave the work to a local company and are delighted with the results. The fixed transom brackets are fitted with pins so that the whole platform can be easily removed should we decide to venture out of the Med. As all mooring in the Med is stern to, a boarding ladder is also a must and this can be raised and lowered via one line. We also opted for a telescopic ladder fitted under the platform to keep the area clear and rather than re-use the old boarding ladder we had a stainless steel and teak step fitted on the transom.

Thanks Mark,

I hadn't considered making the platform completely removable. Have you removed it yet? If so I'm curious how heavy it is and where you store it when underway?

If you get a chance, would you be able to take a close-up or two of the actual transom bracket and pin arrangement?

Thanks again,
Erin

The platform can easily be removed by two persons, we removed it to fit the telescopic ladder underneath. As to storage, as it is new I have never removed it and stored it onboard but I think it could fit in the cockpit locker (would need to check this). I will be back onboard at the end of the month and will take some photos of the fixing arrangements.

Your swim platform is really nice. I really like how you worked out that small step to the left side. Beautiful job. I really like all these swim platforms and how people add them and solve the issues. Thanks for sharing these photos.

Howdy Mark,

We're about to meet with a couple local shops to tackle our arch and swim step and really like yours. If you don't mind could you share how you tackled the transom step? How is this mounted, did you remove the eater heater for access or go another route?

Thanks,
EB

Yes the heater was removed to provide access, replaced all the hoses at the same time. Tough job but worth it

Here's our swim platform on our IP40. Stainless and Plasteak. We used existing swim ladder as steps to cockpit. Pivots up when not needed. Had it done locally in Norfolk.

Found a 4 tread telescopic under mount ladder on e bay, similar to the one in the attached photo. This was mounted under the swim platform (see photo from precious post) and works really well. Although it was made in China the quality was very good, I wash it down regularly with fresh water and keep it well lubricated with silicon spray so far so good.

No pics yet, our arch is still under construction. Once it's complete and the new stern seats are done, the swim platform is next. Hoping that will be complete in the next few weeks. I'll share pics once it's finally done.

Thanks,
Erin
