Laminate Sails for IP was created by ventodivita
All,
Our original sails are beyond their useful life. We'll be replacing within the next year. Don't really want another set of bottom-end dacron sails that will lose shape within a couple of years but last forever. Looking for feedback from anyone with experience purchasing laminate sails for their IP. What did you learn and how has your decision worked out? Did performance (such as it is) improve? Any downside (other than price). Anything a first-time laminate buyer should know or be wary of? How about cruising laminates (not really sue what that means-sounds like marketing hype).
Thank you!

We have just installed quantum laminate sail to replace main sail. We were interested in maintaining a better shape on a mast reefed mainsail. Just finished trip to Key West (Intention was Dry Tortuga) winds picked up to 30-40 knot winds. Performed beautifully. Much stronger sail material than Dacron. Manufacture stated no wind speed limit (limits that would cause stretching) Probably increased our speed 1/2 to 1 knot. Can be used as storm sail when reefed. Will maintain shape longer than Dacron so in that way more durable. For mast reefed sail better shape, less drag. For high winds the stay sail and reefed mainsail combination worked very well.

Joel,
Thank you for the response! That's good to know. I had a feeling that it would be better to consider laminate sails. No upper wind limit is very cool. Quantum has a good reputation and we have a loft nearby. Might give them a call.

Hi Jeff and everyone else...
I'm curious to know if you ended up with Quantum's composite main sail and if it improved the performance of your boat.
I'm buying a 2006 IP445 and the main is original Dacron without battens. It's tired and I'm facing the decision of a new main.
The genoa is a 110% original and I'm guessing that it's not far behind. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thank you
Tom
