Sails for IP485

I just bought a 2004 IP485 and it probably could use new sails.

Does anyone have lightly used sails for sale?

If not, any recommendations on sails that won't cost a fortune?

Hello - I purchased all new sails for mine (albeit in the UK).

I specified Hydranet which has proved far better than the original cloth.

Your are ultimately limited by the travel of the cars but a 130% is possible, which I also selected. The 485 is after all unpowered.

Full length vertical battens have made an unbelievable difference to shape and set and I would recommend very strongly.

Foam luffs have also improved pointing no end.

If I can be any help on 485 matters please let me know. I dont know all the answers by a long way but now with nearly 5 years of ownership have picked up a thing or two.

Which brand of sails did you get? If you don't mind me asking, how much did they cost?

We are experiencing a number of leaks at the hatches, mast, and main electric winch. Have you ever had leaks and if so can you recommend the best way to mitigate them?

I went to Kemp sails in the UK. Really good service and obvioulsy they now have all the measurements as they took these themselves. I am guessing the fact that they are UK based is not much help but you never know with the way the pound has gone they might be a good option. If so and I can be of any help please let me know. You might want to PM me. Of course I dont have any connection with them other than being a very satisfied customer.

I aslo had a leak around the mast. I found running a very thin band of sealant around the seal and tightening up the "jubilee" clamp completely solved the problem. I aslo made a canvass boot (you often see them on blue water yachts) to go around the mast as additional protection because in big seas the 485 takes plenty of water over the mast area and the boot I think stops this "wall of water" being pressurised into the seal. That is the theory anyway, but it has worked.

I have not had any problems with the winches at all. I am guessing some sealant should be easy to solve that issue. I did have a slightly leaky forward hatch, but replaced all the acrylic in the hatches myself as there was a fair amount fo crazing. It is an easy job and a good opportunity to make certain the seals are all in good condition.
