IP32 Sloop Rigging vs Cutter

Looking at purchasing an IP32, and the current owner has modified the rigging and sailed her as sloop for the past 8 years. Curious if others have done this and any pros/cons. The boat is currently on the Chesapeake, and we’re “newer” to sailing with our experience further south, Coastal Atlantic. Is it just a lack of bad weather and easier sail for the Bay?

We sailed our 27 as a sloop 10 yrs on the bay it's fantastic. These staysails on the smaller IPs are nearly useless in my opinion.

I have an IP 29 that was sold from the factory as a sloop. The original owner sailed her as a sloop for many years. I have also and she handles fine. My previous IP was a 27. It was cutter rigged. I kept my storm jib hanked on and used it as a stay sail and in stiff winds when I didn't want to fool with the roller furling. I recall a particular sail from Luperon back to the Turks and Caicos where the setup was very helpful. This set up was so nice I have since added an inner forestay to the IP29...but haven't worked out the hardware yet. If nothing else the staysail is a good back up when the roller furling gets buggered on a long cruise:)

Enjoy that IP32...they are beautiful boats!

I should have added...if you want to put an inner forestay back on the IP32 it should not be a big deal. The fitting on the deck goes down into the anchor locker. That is likely still in place...you can look into the anchor locker and see it attached in the center. The attachment on the mast will also be there. Likely all you need is the stay. Not sure what there is on the deck...blocks/track for handling the sail? I do like the cutter rig:)

A lot will depend on the type of sailing you intend. On my 32 and now on my 37 one of the drawbacks is when sailing in bays or similar when multiple tacks are required. The furled staysail becomes 'sticky' and  tacking the jib through the slot is a pain. deploying (unfurling) the staysail eases that problem somewhat. On my 32 I toyed with the idea of making the staysail forestay into a detachable unit to reattach on one side at the lifelines to move it out of the way.
I decided not to do so after I moved the boat to Florida. On my replacement 37 I also have decided to leave it as is.
Anecdotally, in 2005 when we completed the purchase of our 32 in Fort Meyers and sailed her back to Panama City Beach we got clobbered by a storm. The staysail was a huge benefit in that 12 hours. Double reefed main, furled jib and fully deployed staysail kept us moving safely and under control. My sailing mentor with thousands of sea miles was grinning from ear to ear. He now owns that 32.
Personally I really like the cutter rig. While the staysail is not perfect, there are mitigations you can do. Example the detachable stay option, Hayden took an approach on his 35 and removed the boom. I took a different approach on my 32 and repeated it on my 37. On this IPYOA site under pictures for the 37 you can see my approach. My goal was better positional control of the boom and blocks on the traveler. To that end I removed the manual stops and installed turning blocks with lines led to the cockpit. My mentor who bought the 32 liked that and has kept it on that boat. Mac's 2cents.
