Do late nineties IP 40's have 316L SS chainplates?

It's my understanding that Island Packet changed over to 316L SS chainplates with weep holes sometime in the late nineties for the IP 40's. Can anyone confirm or deny this? If they did upgrade, what year model or hull number would have the newer style chainplates? TIA

Hi Jim,

Did you get anywhere with your research on this?
I have found an email from Adam at Hake Marine regarding chainplates. We have a 1999 IP40 and are trying to discover if we have 304L or 316 in the chainplates.
here is a copy of part of the email.
Dear Doug, From our records in 1995 we switched to 304L stainless from Garhouer. In 1999 they switched to 316L. Your boat being an IP40 #94 it would have been in the later part of 1998 and would most likely have the 304L in it. Our engineer said its pretty safe to say that your boat does not have the Pre 304 in it and should be safe. Although there are no records of what went into each boat until 1999 we cannot guarantee these findings but only assure you that we believe that your boat got the 304L and has had no reported failures to the factory to date. Hope that this helped. Thanks for the email. Adam Beattie

Hello:

So the chain plate progression is: 304 >>> 304L (in 1995) >>> 316L (in 1999).

Does anyone know why Hake Marine considers the 304L to be a "safe" alternative? Is it just because there have been no reported failures?

Has anyone had to replace deteriorated 304L chain plates??

Thank you
