Super 8 Descender Boom Brake was created by hayden
Here we are sailing downwind wing on wing from Green Turtle in the Abacos to Great Sail in 20 knot winds. I am off watch, I just came below to remind everyone how easy and how great this $39.00 super eight descender boom brake really is. This has been one of the best items I have added to our rigging. This simply works great. It locks the boom at any point of sail, and the boom will not move. It will also keep the boom fixed while motoring. If you do not have a boom brake, then this is the answer.

Ordering the boom brake with in the next few days. What diameter and length of line do you use with the brake? Thanks for another great idea.

I also liked your idea, Hayden. Beats preventers, and safer, too..

It took awhile to figure out that the "Descender" was actually climbing hardware. The proper name for the piece of metal is: Big "8" Rescue Descender - Polished Stainless Steel

Steve:
Yes, climbing gear, that is the link, great job.

Bob:
I use 1/2" line and on our IP35 the lengths are as follows:

1. From center boom to stanchion base just forward of the mast is 12 feet on each side, so that is 24 feet
2. From my port side turning block aft to the staysail winch is 14 feet

Total on our IP 35 is 36 feet needed, I would buy 40 feet of 1/2" line.

NOTE:
This is the album description details I wrote....it has all the information:
Here is our new boom brake set up using a super 8 stainless steel descender. These can be found for $40 at www.USrigging.com. S/V Andromeda, IP44-35, first found idea and added it to their boat.. Costs $40 descender, 40-50 feet 1/2

Here are a few more photos of this set up while sailing wing on wing home from the Bahamas.

Hayden,
Great photos and very useful information as we upgrade items on our IP-380. Can you share the specifics on the whisker pole you use, i.e., length (adjustable?), brand/model, source and attachment system to the mast?

We are on our first shake down cruise and tomorrow we leave Ft Myers Beach for Naples where a new Tigres windlass awaits us at the City Marine. I am bit tired of raising my 55 lb Rocna by hand/mast winch.

Thanks Hayden,
This looks like an interesting solution that I would like to try. I've ordered the descender and it should arrive today. My problem is that HONU is in Mexico and I'm in California and I can't measure the length of line I will need on an IP38. We're heading back to Mexico in two weeks to get her ready for hurricane season and hope someone who reads this can give me an idea of how much line I will need to take down with me. I'm thinking fifty feet should do it, but would like to hear if someone has another idea.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike.
I am sure 50 feet will cover you as I really only need about 36 feet but said 40. The 38 is similar in these lengths, but to make sure, just take 55 feet of 1/2".

Thanks Hayden. I'll add 55 feet of 1/2 inch to the list of things we're taking back.
