plank to hold jugs on deck was created by Vanilla
Hi,

I have an IP35 and want to install 2 diesel and 2 water 5 gallons jugs on deck. Any preferd side for any reason? Should it be all the way forward or midship.

Any of you have a picture of your installation?

I have seen many IP cruisers add these to the mid ship area by using a board tied to the stanchions or to the lower shrouds. With the board secured, then 2 to 4 jugs can easily be tied to one side. the boards can have holes in then to help with the lines and I have seen cleats screwed to the boards as well. I would keep the jugs to one side allowing the other side for an easy walk to the bow. Which side is up to you. Your diesel and pumpout are on your port side, and your water is starboard. If on port, the jugs would be forward of the services for pumpout and fuel as these are more aft. If on starboard the water fill is midship and would be where the jugs would be, so you would need to plan for water fill.

For us, we are coastal and have not gone off to the Bahamas or Caribbean yet, so we do not use jugs for fuel. Water is more of an issue for us as the IP35 only holds 90 gallons. Two people will use about 12-15 gallons per day if they are conservative. That's been our usage. So, I have those 5 gallon flexible water jugs that I use to carry water via the dinghy when I need to. I do not carry jugs on deck at this time.

We are thinking of adding a plank as well - for the plastic gas tanks for the dingy outboard.

We've been cruising in the Caribbean for two seasons now and find no need to clutter the deck with fuel or water jugs. For the offshore trip from NC to the Caribbean I used two 15 gallon Vetus bladder fuel tanks mounted in the lazarettes. I carried one spare 5 gallon rigid tank of water on board. If you have to schlep water to the boat use collapsible water jugs that you can get at most any camping store.

People think that you need the deck mounted jugs on a cruising boat - you don't. Once you are in the Islands, fuel is readily available. We have a 5 gallon tank in the dink and carry a small 2.5 gallon jug for mixing gas/oil.

I also carry a 5 gallon diesel jug which we use to transport diesel fuel as necessary.

This arrangement has served us well since 2003.
