is bend in mast ok for an ip35? was created by a Guest
For clarification, 'bend' in mast means the mast has a curve, 'rake' in mast means the mast is tilted off verticle.
My question is this. My rigger who is a well recognized 'expert, and I trust his judgement, says the slight bend in my mast is fine. It is probably 3-4 inches from verticle at the masthead. In the IP manual for 1p35's, they recommend no bend.
What have you other owners found and do you rig with a slight bend in your mast, or have you rigged a straight mast?

Steve:
We have a fully battened main and we keep a bend in the mast about 4" If you had a roller furling main then there should be no bend. So it all depends on your sail.

I have an IP 29 (#10). It also has a full battened mainsail and I have a curve/bend in my mast. I've owned TRINITY for about 7 years. No problems.
I was at the IP factory this March (2012) and I asked Karstan (sp?) about the bend. He said he didn't know about what the mast should be like with a full battened mainsail but with a "normal" mainsail the mast should (rake) lean back (pre-set with the mast tabernacle on the cabin floor) so that if you let the main halyard shackle down to the cabin top it shoud be about 1 mast "diameter" aft.

Hope this helps.

That the gist of my question. I know a 'rake' is ok, but many IP owners have a 'bend' which the manual for the boats say a bend is a no-no. Mine is about 4 inches as you look up the mast to the masthead. It was adjusted professionally by a trusted rigger. 'Stix and riggin's' in Houston, to take out the slight droop in the forestay.
Thanks steve
