replace mast boot??? was created by Sailbatical
I just purchased my 1989 IP38 back in April. The mast has developed a trickle leak. The mast boot is grey and soft and seems like it needs to be replaced? There is also a black foam-like material that is folded and "stuffed" around the mast inside the cabin that I'm hesitant to remove??? What brand boot/type should I use? I need to install it while the mast is in place. i don't plan on stepping the mast - too much $$$ right now.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The boot on deck has a small thin plate that is about 8-10 inches out from the the mast. If you caulk around that plate, even though it may not look like the culprit, it should stop you leak. At least it did on our 1987 38 IP #40.
I can not remember his name, but there is an Island Packet rental place in St Thomas, USVI and he gave me the advice. I just recauked after 5 years with no leaks.

Hi all,

Further to this thread, our mast boot is the original on a 1998 IP 40 (Hull # 100).

I also dont want to pull the mast out at the moment, and whilst the boot looks okay, is there something to apply to it, so it doesn't look so malnourished (eg) some type of preservative / restorer?

We use 303 Aerospace Surface Protectant on all rubber items including the mast boot, cowls, tailing winches, engine panel, dinghy and whale pump. This spray adds SPF protection to the rubber and also cleans it up a little. It may help make your mast boot look better. If not, make a sunbrella canvas wrap and velcro on a cover.
