Head Bolts, how they work

Head Bolts, how they work was created by hayden
This weekend I installed a new head and had the chance to learn what Bobby told us about these head bolts and how they simply thread into the base. Well....one of my bolt/nut combos was seized up and I ended up backing the entire bolt out of the base to explore. Sure enough the bolt is simply screwed into the head floor. The interesting aspect is that the bolt is a lag screw on the bottom and a machine screw on the top for cap nut. The base seems to be built up on the underside so that these long lag screws can be threaded into the base. With this seized bolt, I simply backed it out, then mounted the head, and screwed it back in. So if your head bolts break off, I guess you could drill new holes and screw down new ones. Has anyone every broken any of these? Has anyone replaced these with new ones? These look like custom screws/bolts. Any idea where they came from?

Hayden:

They are called hanger bolts and the come is brass, steel, Stainless Steel, etc in a wide variety of sizes.

I've broken them off and rather than use a screw extractor it is usually easier to just slide the head over enough to mark and drill clean holes and then reinstall using stainless bolts. The original bolts on the boat are brass and they tend to break off fairly easily.

Check out Jamestown distributors or your local hardware store for replacements. Easy to install - after drilling the new hole (or deciding to use the old hole) install two nuts to the threaded part of the bolts. Tighten the two nuts against each other, then use a socket or wrench to screw the lag bolt portion into the floor.

Thank you Bobby, Good info, good stuff. Now I know where to get new ones if I break any. Mine did look a little rusty, but I replaced them as only one backed all the way out and the others worked fine.

What size are the bolts? I am not at the boat but I thought it might be a good idea to order some stainless ones for the spares kit.

While replacing the old head with a new electric one, I made an
additional screw hole near the original screw holes that held the bottom of
the head in place, the new hole on the backside close to the wall started leaking and would not stop. What is underneath the head. I only drilled about an inch through, could i have drilled through the hull?
Also, now the bilge gets completely full with water, as well as the storage space closest to where the waste water seacock is located. The water is salty. What could be the problem?

It could be that you drilled into the water hose for flushing. Try valving it off and see if it stops leaking.

MAIK:
Drilling near the head floor outside gets you very close to the hull. When I drilled into the head cabinet base, I hit the hull and that was not near the back outside wall.

I am guessing that you drilled into the hull and that you have saltwater leaking at this point. You should check into this bu pulling the boat or diving the boat.

Neil it's possible the fasteners used in the head installation on your boat are different than another's. In situations like sizing fasteners, rigging, etc, you should always do your own measurements. Consider the inexpensive items below, which can be purchased online.
Best of luck and I hope this helps!

Good point. And I do need one of those tools on the boat.
It's always a problem when one is physically separated from one's boat when trying to size parts - in my case, I am in California with my boat currently in Thailand.
