I have recently purchased an IP 40 built in 2000. As I sail mostly in Canadian waters I will be using the macerator discharge. In previous boats that I have chartered I can always determine whether or not the macerator is working properly by traveling at low speed and observing the brown streak that follows the boat during the macerator discharge. There is also generally a change in pitch when the macerator completes its pump out.
In recent trials neither of these two clues are evident. I talked to the IP manufacturer and they felt that perhaps the macerator discharge port is too far forward to create that effect in observing the brown streak. If I cannot discern a change in pitch in the macerator motor, I'm wondering how people have figured out when their holding tank is empty.
My macerator is also hard to hear, so I note the DC ammeter reading when pumping starts, and look for a drop off of ~10 amps when pumping has finished. Hope this works for you.
