Water Pump that kept cycling on/off

Water Pump that kept cycling on/off was created by hayden
I have spent the past year trying to solve my water pump problem where the pump would keep coming on / off. Obviously you would think that a hose somewhere was lose and need to be tighten. I did that and it still came on/off. Next you might think that the faucets needed service. So we did, we took apart every faucet, cleaned all o-rings and re assembled them, even the shower units. Still, on/off! What the heck?

So while anchored off Cuttyhunk, we ran out of water, so I thought. The pump would run but no water....So, off I go in the dinghy to get 10 gallons of water, bring it back and pour it in. Sure enough, the pump runs, but no water. Great, the pump must be bad, no worries, I have a new spare.

After installing the new spare pump, guess what? NO MORE ON/OFF! Yup, it was the pump all along that would not hold pressure. Now after a year of trying to fix this, it is not fixed.

So, if your water pressure system does not hold pressure, and your pump is old like mine was, maybe it is the pump, and not the fittings.

We installed a PAR MAX 3.0
Model 31395-3000
50 PSI (this concerns me, because the old pump was 40 PSI)

Hayden,

We had a similar delimna and sure enough it was ultimately the pump.

One other time, recently, however, it was the clear plastice bowl on the filter housing between the water tank and the pump. For some reason this must have vibrated loose and was allowing air into the system.

Air is the enemy of a pressure water system. Find that air leak and you more than likely will solve the problem.

On another note, the water tank level indicator (both at the tank and gage near nav station) stopped working again as we were laying Galileo up for the winter. Classic problem of the float on the end of the arm on the water tank level monitor becoming waterlogged and sinking straight down in tank thus indicating no water.

My last fix was to replace this float with another cork of the right size.

Has anyone replaced this float with a sealed float of some sort to avoid the waterlogging problem?

A couple of years ago my water tank float became water logged too. I looked around the boat for something that floated and found one of those squishy foam key floats, which I had several of. I cut one down to a similar size to the cork, held it on with a bit of zip tie where the small metal washer was, and it's worked fine ever since. The foam is a closed cell variety (I think they all are), so it won't become water logged, even if you cut it to size. Cheap, simple, works. And I have lots of replacements if it doesn't. I've had two or three seasons on the current one.

Jerry,

Thanks for the input.

The tank level monitor/gag is something I bring home and work on this winter. Your solution looks like the way to go.

Have a good winter,

Thanks for the tip on the fresh water tank float...my next project. I am a new IP owner and am still discovering what I have...the fresh water sytem is my latest. I've noticed that the water pressure surges as the pump cycles on and off. Has anyone come up with a way to temper the surges? Also, there does not seem to be a filter between my fresh water tank and pump...should one be installed?

There should be a filter between the tank and pump - lots of options.

You did not say which model/year IP you have - you can add an accumulator tank to even out the flow or go with a demand type pump if you have an older boat with no accumulator and a bellows type pump.

Bobby, thanks for the reply...I have a 1993 IP38. Based on your comment, I believe it is a bellows pump and definitely no accumulator. Do you have a model / type of demand type pump that you would recommend?

Brad:

We replaced our bellows pump/accumulator in 2001 with a Shurflo 4901-4212 just replaced it again this season as the pressure switch failed - was cheaper to buy a new pump out here than it was to purchase the switch and ship it.

Bobby, thanks for the advice...low water pressure this morning, so I suspect it's time for a new one. I'll research the Shurflo.

Thanks again, Brad

Make sure that you have a good filter between the pump and the water tank.

Will do...thanks again. I had to look up Martinique...looks a lot warmer than the cold weather we are experiencing in SC. Waiting on May for my vacation to St John and 9 days of sailing from Tortuga. Did you use the Shurflo filter too?

You could use a fine mesh filter ahead of the pump - I chose to go with a small see through 5 micron filter. Think that has made a big difference - www.islandpacketphotos.com/view_ad.asp?Ad_ID=1600
