Life raft installation on deck was created by timt64
Hello everybody, I am a relatively new IP owner, we purchased our IP38, hull number 83, in June of this year. I have a Winslow liferaft in a canister that I would like to install on deck. The canister has a stainless steel cradle with four holes for bolting to the deck. My preferred location is on the starboard side directly in front of the traveller and above the nav station.

My question concerns installing the mounting bolts. I assume that I will have to drill all the way through the deck and install backing plates underneath, correct? Or is the deck layup thick enough to hold wood or metal screws without going all the way through? If I go with through-bolts, should I cut away the inside liner to access the bottom of the deck? Or can I install the backing plates directly on the liner?

I have no experience with drilling into this deck, so I need some help here.
Thanks, Tim

Tim:
I have drilled through the deck and bolted items down. The deck is thick, 1/8 to 3/16" maybe a 1/4" and then under the deck is a space that is filled in then under that space is the headliner that you see from below. So there is a gap between the headliner below and the deck topside. Some areas this gap is solid, some areas it is filled with resin some areas it is hollow. So the best way I have done this is to lay out your mounting plate and drill a small 1/8" hole down into the deck and through the headliner. Then from below, use a hole saw and drill a hole big enough for a socket head, washer and nut. Drill this hole into the headliner, 1/8" and the disc of the headliner will pop out. Now you can either see the deck, up there another 1/2" to an 1" or you will see filler, or it may be solid. If solid, bolt and go, then cover with a teak plate. If hollow, or foam, clean it out and get your washer and bolt up against the solid deck. Again cover with a teak plate. This is how I have done this and how I have seen this done. Obviously you need to also drill out the 1/8" pilot holes to the bolt size holes for mounting the hardware.

Some where I have photos for this headliner and space and mounting bolts. If I can find them I will share.

One more idea. Have you thought about mounting the raft under the nav desk? This is where we have ours on the 35 and I know the 38 has just as much room.

Hayden,
Thanks for the info. Would you recommend caulking the bolt holes with 3M 5200 or some other type of sealant?

I am mounting the liferaft above deck because I want my wife to be able to deploy it by herself. The raft weighs 40+ lbs, and I'm concerned that she would have trouble getting it on deck if it was stored down below or in the lazarette.

Yes, I would use 3M 4200 or 3M 5200 to seal the bolt holes.
Agree on lifting these rafts to deck. That is not easy.

The IP factory should also be able to send you headliner material if you want to cover the hole you make with a disk that you can glue or screw on. There are disks like this in my cabin under some of my winches, and you barely see them.
