IP32 Quarterberth Mattress

I need to replace our worn out quarterberth mattress. The existing mattress is two sections connected lengthwise by a sewn in hinge that allows one half of the mattress to be folded over the other for access to the compartments below it. There is a cutout and separate cushion over the engine compartment itself, but it's a real pain folding the mattress over every time I need to access the raw water strainer, shaft log, etc.
I'm thinking about replacing the folding half (the inboard half) with three separate cushions instead. I can't see why this wouldn't work.
Has anyone tried this?

Yes, we did this on our IP32. It works very well and gives us easy access.

Did you have to do anything to keep the outboard section (the large half) from sliding away from the cushions? I wonder if the aft end would need to be held down with Velcro to keep the two halves from separating.

So far there hasn't been a problem. Rather than wrestling around trying to cover the entire aft section with a bed pad and sheets, I purchased 2 twin sized memory foam pads from Costco (3 inches thick), and make up the two "pallets" with twin sized sheets. This sure has made getting into lockers and checking the bilge a lot easier.
