I'm hoping to install a diesel generator in an IP380 this spring. Looking for tips on locating it and best brand.

One I have studied and like is by Entec West...my friend also has this installed in his IP37 and we have photos over on www.ipphotos.com
Go there and enter entec into the search, the photos come right up.

Not having a genset on out 35, i would recommend that you look into solar first, then a wind machine next like the D400, and then finally a genset. Of course, the genset is about the only way to go if you think you need AC at anchor.

Solar costs about 1500-2000 dollars
Wind D400 costs 2500 plus 1000 dollars for the pole
Gensets will cost 8000-10,000 dollars.

Something to think about.

Do you have solar or wind?

I tried to buy an Entec West 4200D, their 4.2KW version a couple of weeks ago, and was told they are no longer selling them due to to economy. So I'm going with a Next Gen 3.5KW. A bit smaller, but about 30% cheaper too. I agree with your comments on solar/wind, but the admiral wants the option of AC & heat at anchor.

Thank you for your comments, Hayden. I check out the web site that you provided and also install photos. We've decided that it's too much expense, labor and loss of storage, mainly to have a/c at anchor. The A/C goes in this spring. Will post the result of that for benefit of other subscribers to this site.

I am also considering installing a diesel generator on my IP380. One question that has come up is whether to install a separate seacock for the raw water intake, or "t" off of the engine intake seacock, or the AC seacock, . Comments?

I have a separate seacock for engine, genes and a/c raw water. I have always read that it is safer to have a separate seacock, although that does mean adding holes to the boat. I'm sure more mechanically minded owners than I am will be able to throw in their 2 cents. Good luck.

We have had our IP380-024 Shawnee since 2004. No idea what "generator ready" meant. We didn't install a generator - solar and wind came with the boat. But check the IP Mail list archives and photos on IPYOA to see what others have done. I recall some folks relocated the hot water tank, and put generator under cockpit sole. Others put in cockpit locker, likely starboard side, connecting where original 30Amp charger connected. (our original charger was removed and upgraded Inverter/Charger installed by original owner in locker on port side near nav station. On seacock - - - our AC intake is port side near the bow since our AC install is near salon hanging locker. So not good for generator. Our Spectra RO intake is near engine raw water, but on starboard side. Makes it easy to get to. Would be good location for generator too for easy access. Enjoy the upgrade process. Drew S
