cutless bearing removal was created by g.francis
Hi all,

I have to replace cutless bearing this weekend and one of the methods I am toying with is cutting back the stern tube a bit to avoid pulling the prop shaft (which spins smoothly and vibration free).

I have seen references and some info but wondering if anyone active here has done it and has any suggestions. I have heard that the optimal length of cut is 3/8 to 1/2". Also that the new bearing is seated the same depth into the stern tube as it was before. Some use a pair of channel locks and some use a pipe wrench to rotate the old bearing out.

Any help is much appreciated.

Greg

Rather than cutting the stern tube, just leave the cutlass sticking out 1/4" to 3/8" if you will still have room for a zinc (either streamlined or donut) in front of the prop.

IP370, we left cutlass bearing extended 3/8” from stern tube to allow for easier replacement. Notice finger nail polish on the zinc screw to slow deterioration

Harry,

I don't know the specifics of your boat but from my perspective expect to need to press the bearing out which means removing stern tube. I cut the bolt heads off and pushed the bolts in. Mark the top of the stern tube with a chisel so that it goes back the same way. I cut the stern tube back a half inch so the next time it comes off without removing stern tube. Buy new bolts and nuts and put the heads inside, much easier. Either notch the bolt ends to tighten with a screw driver or grab lightly with pliers to tighten. Before tightening up completely check the shaft is centered in the stern tube and that it spins okay. I am going in the water tomorrow so I will let you know how close the alignment is. Hoping for the best.
