I wonder if anyone can help me here...in the attached image, the "red part" (is it a dampener...or a spacer....I don't know the proper nomenclature) that goes between the transmission output and the prop shaft failed as I was approaching my slip in the marina (that's a whole 'nother exciting story)....two bolts common to the prop shaft flange and the "red part" worked their way loose (I found them underneath the engine), and the load on the remaining bolt was too much for the red part to take and it sheared out. I'm in contact with Mastry in St Petersburg Florida to procure a replacement, but they are asking for the part number of my transmission and I don't see it in my owner's manual. Does anyone know what this part is called or what the part number is or could you set me in the right direction? I'm hoping to buy a replacement part. I don't think JB Weld is going to be adequate for this repair! :)

The vessel is a 1993 IP35 (35-163 off the line)...with a 3JH2E Yanmar 35hp 3 cylinder engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated...thank you!

I have taken this apart many times on ip35-165 Island Spirit. I do not have that red part. It looks like an after market add on for vibration or sheer in if snagging a line. Can you simply not use that and rebolt the shaft flag directly to the transmission output coupler. That's the way mine is together.

Hayden,

I've been a long time follower (and a huge fan) of your posts (in particular your autopilot installation)....but this is the first time I've posted anything, and frankly, I'm blown away at the quick response. I have a yacht surveyor friend who said the exact same thing as you...eliminate that part and connect the prop shaft directly to the transmission output. However, ten minutes ago I ordered what may or may not be the correct part from Mastry in St Pete's. So when I get down to the task (in a couple of weeks when I return to the marina where the vessel is located), I will evaluate whether it's really needed, and will follow up and let you know...for posterity.

THANK YOU immensely for the help!!!!!

If you look through my photo album on my engine work, you will see the transmission output coupler and the shaft coupler bolted together.

I think your red part is called a SHAFT SAVER .

Here is tththe photo album.
