My stuffing box is plain wore out from wrenching. I want to replace it and the hose along with it. I'm not able to find the specs for these items... shaft diameter, cutless bearing, shaft length, etc. I want to plan on replacing all the components as they are most likely worn out. I can't even find who sells the parts I need. Help!

I'm not at my boat but wondering if the factory manual/paperwork that came with the boat when new might have that? Have you called IP? Snead Boat works? Are you looking at installing dripless?

I have asked the factory to answer this 30 seconds after it was posted. I have asked again today for an answer. No reply.

Yes, maybe you can call the IPY factory and ask them directly for support. I am trying to find out but do not have an answer yet.

I don't have any boat documentation. I do have a manual for the engine, but it won't address the stuffing box... probably the shaft. I'll check it on Thursday when I'm back at the boat. I've considered droplets but have decided to stay with the stuffing box.

Info from the IPY Factory:

Hi Hayden,

1) Stuffing box (packing gland) comes from Buck-Algonquin: 410-643-7145
2) The hose is an extra thick piece of black rubber hose. Should be able to get from BA above.
3) Shaft diameter is 1”
4) Cutless bearing is a standard bearing for a 1” shaft.
5) Shaft length, info would need to come from Kevin at General Propeller: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Hope this helps,
Karsten

I'm very curious to see how this all goes. I love our IP27, it's the perfect size for our current needs and handles the Lake Erie chop with ease. What I don't like about it is the difficulty in getting to some of the areas that need to be maintained, the stuffing box is one such item.

Please let us know how your project works out.

Thanks

There are some recent postings on the IP Home Port Forum on this topic (some of them mine). Check them out for suggestions on tools to use, etc. All agree that there's little to no access for stuffing box and stern tube maintenance and repairs.

We all have learned that THE BEST WAY to loosen or tighten the packing nut is to use ...
#1. PB Blaster first to lube it
#2. Use a 30" crowbar and hammer and tap on the flats cutting a notch that the crowbar will bight onto.

The threads are normal threads.

No tool is better. This works the best.

As I'm working on it I'll take some pictures and provide an update. I've got a lot of projects going on so this may take some time.

I did some light tapping with a hammer and centerpunch after lubing with PB Blaster and Kroil. (Personally, I think Kroil works better, but we've all got our own stories!) What worked for me in the end was the large-jaw vise grips. I don't like the idea of hammering the stuffing box nuts with enough force to joggle the drive shaft and stern tube. My view is that the hammer -- or the bigger hammer -- should only be a last resort. Do check out the other postings (IP Mail archive, IP Home Port) and see what others have done. Good luck!

Michael:

If you loosen the stuffing box nuts every season, then backing the locking nut off does not take much force at all. If it has not been taken apart for years, then it does take a lot more force. I have taken this all apart while in the water, and I repacked the stuffing box while in the water. The amount of water that runs in is about the amount that would flow through a drinking straw. No worries.

The key to the stuffing box is to develop a method that you are comfortable with, take it apart and put it back together again making sure you know how to deal with this key part of your boat. Who knows, you may be 100 miles offshore or in in a remote location and that is NOT the time to learn about HOW to take this apart of how to tighten or repack the stuffing box.

For me, I have tried every method, wrenches, strap wrenches, vice grips, pliers, chain wrenches, you name it....and nothing works, for me, as well as the 30" crow bar and a hammer.

So, I recommend that we all learn how to take the packing locking nut off and back off the packing glade nut and put it all back together again. Just find a way that works for you and learn how to do this.

I completed my stuffing box repair. I agree with Hayden that the because the box is so hard to reach, it often ignored until a have to do it moment. I tried wrenching to no avail. Five days of spraying with PB blaster over eight days and tapping with a plastic mallet the stuffing Bo broke free and I was able to remove it and repack while in the water. I repacked with two rings of GFO. It had only one ring of worn out packing gland fiber. No wonder! I made a gland seating tool out of PVC. I think it was 1.5 inch by 2.5 inches long. I cut a strip lengthwise out of the 2.5 inch, heated it in boiling water and molded it around a one inch shaft. This tool snaps on and off the propeller shaft. Using the tool I was able to install two rings of GFO and tap them into place with thru plastic mallet. Yes I cut it properly. I hand tightened the stuffing gland by hand. I'm waiting for it to start leaking before adjusting it some more, but it been thief weeks. My bilge is now dry.
