I am trying to remove my rudder. I have read Mark Lawrence's photo essay in the IP Photos.com website but have a few questions as to the sequence of steps to remove the rudder.
I see the process as something like the following and would appreciate comments as to the real way to do this.
1. Remove the rudder shoe. I have removed the 5 SS bolts at the forward end of the shoe, and the 2 small screws at the aft end but am unable to remove the shoe from the bottom of the rudder. Mark mentions a jam pin attaching the shoe to the rudder, and "the need to turn the rudder 180 degrees".
- Does the pin need to be removed?
- how does one turn the rudder 180 degrees? Presumably this can only be done after undoing the steering and auto pilot quadrants.
- what does turning the rudder achieve - provide access to the jam pin to be able to remove it, or align the pin with a slot in the shoe to enable the shoe to "drop" off?
2. Undo the steering quadrants. Well, maybe this should be step 1), if this is a pre-requisite to getting the shoe off.
3. Loosen the "packing gland"
4. Support the rudder by a line up to the transom.
5. Lift the boat
6. Remove the bolt at the collar beneath the helm seat
7. Lower the rudder from the hull.
Thank you all.
