IP38 Tachometer problem was created by S/V HONU
We motor-sailed our IP38-149 from the San Francisco Bay to Pillar Point Harbor last week. About a half hour into a six hour trip the tachometer ceased to work. The temp, oil pressure, and fuel gauges continued to operate while the tach didn't. We stopped for fuel in Pillar Point and the tach worked when we restarted the engine and continued to do so through anchoring. It worked again for about a half hour when we motored out of the harbor two days later and then died for the remainder of the trip back (another motor-sail due to lack of wind). Sounds like a heat-related problem to me, but I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone here experienced similar behavior and come up with a cause and solution?

Thanks

Mike:
We have had this problem, and I do not think it is heat related. The tach is a wiring problem most likely. Look for the wiring lead, on the engine wiring harness, that goes to the tachometer sensor. These wires are two press on fittings that press onto the 1/4" flat sensor leads. Pull these leads off and with a pliers, simply press them tighter, making the fitting tighter. Be careful not to over flatten or tighten them, because then you will not be able to press then onto the sensor fitting again. No big deal, because you can always cut then off and crimp on new press on fittings. Clean the two copper tachometer sensor connections, where these wires press on, and you should be good to go. I bet this is your issue, loose fitting tachometer sensor wires, nothing else.

Thanks Hayden. I won't be able to get to the boat until Monday afternoon and that will be the first thing that I check.

I found corrosion on the sender contacts. I cleaned them well and tightened the connectors which fixed the problem. Thanks for the help

If you have a Yanmar Tach and you can not see the hour meter, Cover it when it is not in use. In some cases the contrast will return... DieselDawgYachtCare.com
