High Oil Pressure plus Sender was created by Williamsalan
Hi All

My engine is a 3jh2e installed in an IP350 located in Germany.

Since purchasing the boat (8 years ago) from its first American owner I noticed it had high oil pressure which has not been a problem until now when the oil sender in the front lower right of the engine has started to leak oil into the bilge. The oil pressure has clearly blown the pressure sender. There appears to be no other damage to the engine as we caught the leak early enough. The sender has two electrical terminals but there is some doubt as to where this is the original equipment for the engine. The instrument panel has an oil warning light / alarm and a pressure gauge. One of the wires on the sender just happened to fall off due to a poor connection whilst we were looking at the problem. This did not seem to affect either the engine panel alarm or the pressure gauge on the engine panel.

Two questions please:

1) Can we fit the single pole oil sender in place of the twin pole oil sender?

2) What would be the cause of high oil pressure and can we adjust it?

Here is help from our ipmail list...
Thank you Brian.
Hayden:

You can tell him that he might try:

1.      Using a temporary manual gauge to determine what psi actually is, or

2.      Replacing the electric sender and gauge as a matched set, to ensure they are compatible, or

3.      Determine how alarm is operated and thus what sending unit is required.

These are courtesy of my brother who is travelling in the UK right now.

Amazing list – the expert vacationing in the UK, tells the Canadian, who tells the American, who tells the German. J

I had this problem years ago in a German made automobile. In that case the tube leading to the oil pressure relief valve had clogged, causing an over pressure situation. Unfortunately for me, when I was on a trip many miles from home, the high pressure blew out the seal on the oil filter, dumping all of the engine oil on the road, destroying the engine.

If this turns out to truly be a high pressure situation, I would recommend that you have a mechanic find the source of the problem.
