Spare Parts was created by connor1015
We currently own a 1999 IP380. We only have about another 5 years to work and off we go on our adventure. Headed to the Caribbean for a few years after that who knows what. My question is. I would like to build our spare parts inventory during the next few years so what would be a recommended list of what to have?

Thanks for your help

Spares that we carry are:
Injectors
Motor mounts
Alternator
Fresh water pump for house water pressure
Fuel lift Pump
Fuel filters
Oil Filters

Then the more important aspect, the knowledge on how to fix your own systems. We do all our own mechanical work and we have learned how to work on all our systems. So, besides spare parts, you should have the tools and practice on fixing your systems on your boat. Start now, for example, at your home dock, take apart every fuel line fitting and every fuel line from the fuel tank to the injectors. Then put it all back together and make it run. Knowing your fuel system is #1. If you can do this, this is most likely your number one fix when cruising.

Do you do your own engine work? Oil, Fuel and transmission oil?

(Crying smiley)

Hayden, do I really have to PRACTICE taking things apart and putting them back together?

LOL

Ahhh, the joys of boat ownership!

(Yes I do most of my own work. I let the younger guys put the new water heater in, tho. Did I commit a mortal boat-sin?)

Sam:
I would recommend that you take apart your fuel lines and fittings, learn how to clean a plugged up line and put it back together and get the engine running. Do this at your home dock. Then when you have to do this offshore while sailing downwind in 25 knots wing on wing rolling side to side and 40 miles out to sea, you will have a clue where and how to get your fuel system up and running.

So, you do your own work, that is good news.

Have you taken apart your fuel lines or any fuel fittings and put them back together and started your engine? I really think this is a key skill.

Haven't disassembled the fuel lines on purpose, no. But have bled air out of it.

Hayden, I have don all of the above. I try , when time permitting, to do all of my own maintenance on our boat. The first time I have to bleed the air out of the line was at 3 am 4 miles out when the engine died. There was no learning curve. I have most of these parts now, but will add more. I also though about adding a starter motor.

My two cents on spares. Attached is our spares inventory in an excel spread sheet.

Some comments: On Delicia we carry a lot of stuff - we leave Oriental NC in Oct and return in May or June. Most of the time we are living on the hook. Because we are on the hook and often alone we have installed a lot of back up systems; radios, heads, inverters, chargers, etc. The spares may seem to be an over kill, but then, having a broken boat is a drag. Even in the US, w/o a car, chasing parts is a problem. We carry spares for all pumps. We also carry a spare solenoid, and had two fail in 8 years. No solenoid = no warm food. Our electric toilets are very reliable, but they are spared 100% for all the moving parts. We carry a spare starter on Delicia now, on our other boat I didn't do that because they run for only a second so a starter motor failure seemed unlikely. But when the breather valve on the exhaust elbow fails it will soak everything in the engine compartment in salt water, as will a raw water line leak. Salt water kills electrical things. Also a jammed ignition switch will lock the starter in the fly wheel and destroy it before you can figure out what is going on - - which is what happened to us. A thing to remember is that a starter for a 3 cylinder yanmar = the one for a 4 cylinder. A fellow cruiser saved us.

At any rate here is the list.
