Has anyone had trouble with this engine/transmission? We had the transmission rebuilt twice and now the rear seal is gone again. Mac boring says this transmission is no longer made and there are no parts for it either. We are looking for a possible replacement and are having trouble finding one that will fit our engine. If we absolutely have to we will repower with another engine/trany. Has anybody done this? If so what engine/trany combo did you use?

What transmission is it? We have a 3JH2e Engine with a KBW10 transmission with a 2.83 gear ratio. My friend, Jeff on Lucille has this engine but I do not know what the transmission model is. Once you know that, take a picture of the transmission plate then you can easily read it and have it for records. Once you have the make and model, I would call Bacons Associates in Annapolis, MD, they sell used items and maybe they have one. Repowering would be very expensive just to fix the trans.

I too am working through a rear engine seal and we have a small leak of engine oil, not red ATF trans oil, that is getting to the shaft coupler and then leaking out between the coupler. I will be pulling this transmission and replacing all engine seals and then lucky for me, I have another KBw10 trans that will replace this one.

So, I will have my old one which is working fine except for this oil sea engine leak. Do you need a KBW10 with a 2.83 ratio? If so, I could sell you my old one.

I have emailed this to you but i wanted to document it in the thread as well. Mack Boring has access to only 3 KBW10 transmissions on Sept 2011. They were surprised that they could find any. These are no longer made and will be harder to find as time goes on. A new one is $3200 and to rebuild a basic service on on is $1100. Most rebuilds will need more than just oil seals, so the clutch will need service and i did not get that price.

So, if you need a KBW10 transmission, you better act fast!

I also have an 1989 IP35 with 5000 hours on the engine. The previous owner had replaced the transmission some time ago. The engine is beginning to burn oil particularly when it has to work hard such as driving the boat at 2500 rpm with the fridge turned on. I now nolonger run both at the same time. I also have an engine/transmission oil leak at their junction.

Have been thinking of a new engine and transmission. The choices appear to be a Yanmar 3YM30 or the 3JH4E. The latter would be preferrable since it generates 40HP which I think is needed if you want to cool the fridge and motor at the same time?

What have you decided to do. The labour cost of replacing just the transmission if you can get one might make a new engine the way to go.

I would look into proving that your engine is shot by doing a compression test on the cylinders. If that is bad, then I would next inquire with www.mackboring.com/ about rebuilding my engine. Next I would inquire with them about a used rebuilt engine and transmission. If all that does not work out, then I would look into re powering with a new Yanmar. Be aware that the new motors require a 3" or 4" exhaust,(yours is 2") so your old muffler and stern exhaust will need replaced as well. The larger horsepower is nice. We have the 3JH2e Yanmar on our 1994 IP35-#165 and it is plenty of power.
