Putting a new electronics suite together was created by spinaker75
Due to a direct hit lightning strike I will soon have the opportunity to put together a new electronic package. Would appreciate input on pro and cons of the major brands, raymarine, garmin, furuno and Simrad.
Thanks,
Bob Young

I have a Garmin unit and I think its fantastic. Super easy to use and the garmin processors are super fast. West marine has a 7" touchscreen gps/radar/sonar package for $2500. Its a pretty sweet deal.

Bob:
I have used B&G as this was the product installed on most Island Packets back in the 90s by the dealers. Today it seems to be mostly RayMarine networks. We do have a RL70C radar / chartplotter unit and we have used this sine 2001 with not issues. Raymarine is great with service when we had our one break down of the transmitter.

I have the B&G autopilot and it has been a real workhorse, I love it. BUT, others have swapped this unit out for the RayMarine autopilots.

So, if all my electronics were gone, I would compare these two companies B&G vs. Raymarine and I would most likely go with Raymarine as the B&G seems to be more racing driven and Raymarine seems more cruiser driven.

Hayden,
Thanks for your input. My electronic had all been updated in 2007 with Simrad products. The former owner was German and felt he had better support in Europe for this brand. I haven't heard anything good about Simrad support over here. Right now I'm leaning toward either Raymarine or Garmin.
