We are just about to take ownership of an IP40. We are going to get it delivered overland and therefore need to unstep the mast. For the most part we are ok with doing this as most things are visible and accessible however I have some concerns that when we start to lift the mast it will be difficult to disconnect the electronics running up the mast. I know that no additional electronic items have been added since the boat was built so my question is, is there a junction box at the base of the mast and when it is lifted everything will just be able to be disconnected easily or will everything need to be disconnected either at the mast head or at the connection on the boat?
Appreciate any advice or photos from anyone that has done this before.

Many Thanks

Zoe:
First thing to check into is the PIN at the mast deck collar. Remove the boot around the mast base, then remove the hose clamp, then look of a steel pin that goes thru the deck collar and thru the mast. You need to loosen all standing rigging and then push this mast pin out first before pulling the mast.

Then at the base of the mast, you will find all your wires connected together with crimps, or but crimps or a junction box. Take photos and label the wires and then start taking them all apart or cut them apart. When you pull the mast, these will need to be pushed into the hole in the side of the mast so that the mast can be lifted up thru the deck collar. BE VERY CAREFUL TO NEVER HAVE YOUR HAND UNDER OR INSIDE THE MAST BOTTOM IN CASE THE CRANE DROPS IS. It is very dangerous and all this work needs to be done by the pros who do this every day. Stay clear.

Once the mast is pulled and on the ground, you will push all the wires up into the mast via a hole on the side of the mast. The bottom of the mast sits on a raised mast step that is bolted to the keel. This raised part goes inside the mast when it is stepped.

Congrats on buying the Ip 40, that is a great model.

Where are you trucking from and where to????

PS:
I have trucked out IP 35 and I have pulled our mast 4 times or more....

Thank you Hayden, this is really helpful. We are actually in Europe, the boat is currently in the South of France and we are bringing her back to the UK for two years before heading across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. There will be probably be a lot more questions before that journey happens though as we get used to her and the systems aboard.

Great, we are all happy to help. I am sure they will know how to pull the mast. Just alert them to the fact that the deck has a stainless steel pin or rod thru the mast and many people are not aware of this.
