Garmin 541s depth reading problems was created by silent
My Garmin 541s has never accurately or consistently worked in shallow water. I have installed the latest software, checked and rechecked all connections and did everything that Garmin tech helped had recommended to no avail . As soon as we sail into water 6 to 8 feet deep, the depth readout begins to blink and then will sometimes freeze at 2.5 feet. Any ideas?

John:
I had a similar problem with my new install. I found the problem to be the depth sensor which was replaced and then it all worked perfectly. Most of these marine sensors are made by AirMar, airmar.com/ so maybe you can find out the model you have from there.

My B&G network of NMEA 2000 uses the Airmar DST800. It was brand new and would not show water below 10 feet. I ran that from Florida all through the Exumas to the Turks and Caicos where I was shipped a new one. I plugged it in and it work perfectly. Go figure.

Thanks. I have the DST800, my second one, and the problem persists. Airmar blames Garmin. Maybe I'll try another one. Did Airmar credit you for the new unit?

John:
My B&G rep worked with me and acquired a new DST800 from Airmar and sent it to me enroute. No charges! He works with Mack Sails which is where I bought all my gear.

Called Garmin today; they suggest setting the frequency to 200 for shallow water and dropping the gain down to 45. I let you know if this works.
