Electronics package suggestion for new IP 460 was created by Jeffrey Cardenas
I am at the exciting stage of planning the outfitting of my new IP 460, delivery late August 2015. Can anyone suggest specifics of what has worked well for them, both in the cockpit and navigation station?
Thanks,
Jeffrey

Jeffery:

First off...THANK YOU FOR BUYING a NEW Island Packet 460, that is a dream yacht. Our buddy boat friends, Eric and Patricia Fulmer own and outfitted a 460, CUTTER LOOSE, a few years back and they are sailing from Granada back up the Annapolis right now. Maybe you can connect up with them and or email them about the 460. They are in Puerto Rico heading for the DR then heading to the Bahamas right now. The 460 is a great yacht, I am sure you will love it. Welcome to the Island Packet Community.

As for electronics, I have used B&G since 2001 and I also have used Raymarine which drives my B&G ram pilot. The Raymarine line has fantastic service and quick repair turn around, I have used this twice. The B&G has not broken much, just one ram pilot failure due to brushes. Now I too am shopping new electronics as mine are old, 2001 but still working well, but I will be upgrading sometime. When I upgrade I will go with a 100% B&G system centered around the ZEUS system and the use of a tablet. There really is no need for a below decks system anymore, because all systems today include WiFi and repeat to the table of choice. I can nearly run my entire boat on a $300 Samsung Tablet. It can do a lot, but it cannot drive the autopilot to the wind or a nav point. It will soon, but right now no.

I too would have a B&G ram pilot, below deck unit. These 12 volt hydraulic units are so robust and just keep on working. Nothing to fail except the brushes on the 12 volt motor after about 20,000 nm. The best thing to do is to have a spare ram ready to go. We had one and it paid off well when our B&G pilot brushes needed replaced. Swap out the ram install the spare, keep going. I love the B&G product line.

This new last year, Zeus system is really impressive, all NMEA 2000 and WiFi and it simply plugs together and will network with everything. Raymarine was the leader, and in my observations, now it is B&G. They are pushing very hard into the OEMs and they are pushing out Raymarine. Yes Raymarine has service and quick turnaround, but B&G seems to be building a massive network of dealers and OEMs that are installing their gear at the factory.

Take a look at B&G, and I would compare a complete system to Raymarine.

Place the screen at the helm and try NOT TO BLOCK your seated helm view. So many times I see helms with screens directly in front of the seated helmsman. Bad design. Do what every you have to do to have your helm screen BELOW your seated line of sight. You will appreciate this.

As for Eric and Patricia, 460 Cutter Loose, please see their wonderful blog here:

Again, welcome and congratulations on your new IP460

What a wonderful welcome to the forum, Hayden. Thank you for your insightful and detailed thoughts on electronics. I had tunnel vision of just the Big Three--Raymarine, Garmin, and Simrad. B&G now merits a closer look.
Great suggestion about screen placement. I'd rather be looking at the sails and the ocean instead of an electronic box. What size screen are most owners using at the helm?
I have been reading the Cutter Loose blog and I enjoy it immensely. It is well written and the pictures are great. And it is inspriational--Eric and Patricia are out there doing it!

Over the last few years we installed new instruments on our 420. We decided to go with Raymarine because they offered everything we wanted at the best price. We chose the C 120-W multi function display over the touch screen because we felt it would be less trouble in rough conditions. The i70 display is a nice piece that can display up to 10 different pages and we have one at the helm and the Nav Station. The one thing we wanted that was beyond our budget was a forward looking sonar.

These links are for our blog and will give more info about our installation. For Helm instruments click here (ip42035-17.blogspot.com), for Nav Station instruments click here (ip42035-21.blogspot.com).

This is exactly the kind of help I need to jump start the electronics outfitting process. Especially useful are the links to antenna tuners, modems, AIS...the little things that are going to help make the system better integrated (and provide comfort and security when I am 1,000 miles from land).
I'm going to be a little needy for information at this stage--on all aspects of the rigging--but as I learn I promise to pay it forward to the new owners who follow me.
Thanks,
Jeffrey

Jeffery,

Electronics are a lot like anchors everybody has a favorite. My IP-37 came with Simrad electronics but after a lightning strike gave me a chance to start over I opted for Garmin with one exception and that was the autopilot. I was so impressed with the ease of use and available functions (like sailing to a wind angle with wind shift alarm) that I got another Simrad autopilot. A couple things that I found very useful are AIS which displays on the chartplotter, MARPA which is more a function of your radar that you must enable that automatically displays CPA information on non AIS targets and finally XM satellite weather radar which will display future tracks of storm cells.

I agree, Bob. Everybody has an opinion but the great thing about a forum like this is that eventually you see common denominators and that helps with decision making.
One question: After losing your electronics to a lightning strike what precautions are you taking now in the event that lightning strikes twice?
Thank,
Jeffrey

Jeff, I have sworn off the particular anchorage but other than that not much. The bonding system did its job and the were no holes blown in the boat's bottom. There was a good thread about lightening strikes on the iphomeprt web site which discusses it in detail but I think the bottom line is when you number is up its up. I wasn't the tallest mast in the anchorage and the boat I was rafted to only had minor damage. One piece of advice I got was to put your handheld vhf and gps in the oven during an electrical storm. It will protect them from any damage and you will at least have those if you get hit, just be sure to remove them before preheating the oven.
