Radar Mount was created by cdwalt
I am adding radar to my IP370. I would welcome some thoughts regarding the mast mount location. I have seen some installations that are at the spreaders however, they appear so very close to the staysail roller furling. I am concerned that there could be problems tacking. On the other hand if the mount is lowered it appears to block the steaming light. I have considered mounting the dome above the inner forestay but, frankly I am concerned about the weight higher in the rigging and the close in blind spot that would result from the higher mount. Any advice?

We mounted ours about a foot under the spreaders and would do this again in a second. I agree that above the spreaders is rather high and not needed. Below the spreaders is not a problem with the stay sail, it will tack just fine, plus most use a kato marine ss mount which has a rub rail protecting the unit. Still, it is not a problem for the stay sail.

Our Maine dealer, Norm Pierce, mounts his radar units below the spreaders and places them about 12' off the deck. This way he says it is also easy to reach with a long extension ladder! Now that is an interesting idea. So below the spreaders is a great place. I do not have any problem seeing targets right up to the boat at this height.

Back in 2002 when we commissioned Island Spirit, I published detailed photo albums on the installs. The radar docs are here:

Hayden,

Thank you very much for your advice. As I mentioned in my note, I have seen many IP's with the dome mounted just below the spreaders. The spacing between the dome and the furled staysail looked tight. It is good to know that there is no problem when tacking the staysail. I plan to use a Seaview mount, from PYI, and will also have a circular guard rail.

I am expecting my IP 370 to be delivered and commissioned sometime within the next two weeks. I am just trying to plan ahead regarding the installation. Of course this is just one item from a long list of "to do" actions. Fun stuff! Thanks again for the input.

Regards,

Chuck
