IP 27 Engine Hatch String

I'm not sure if this is original equipment, but the "handle" to open my engine hatch (in the cockpit sole) is a very strong piece of string in the aft corner. I got to thinking that this is eventually going to break.

How did these come from the factory, with this piece of string? Does anyone have a better device?
