IP 40 How to Open Pedestal was created by stephbnd
Can anyone tell me how to open the square top pedestal on an IP 40? I need to run some wires for my chartplotter and would also like to grease the fittings on the steering. Thanks

If it is an Edson helm: Remove the screws that hold the fiddles about 12ea. They are long - like 3.5" - they go through the fiddles, the top and are threaded into brass plates. After these have been remove you can lift up the top. A note of caution here - the light for the compass must be unplugged as you lift it up. There are two grease fittings on the wheel shaft and one on the op of the vertical shaft. There is another one on the vertical shaft at cockpit sole level inside the round black plate at the base of the helm in the cockpit and another on the pitman arm linkage in the there is another in the rear berth. To access that one you will need to remover the fiberglass cover - about 20 SS 3/4" screws. The fiberglass cover drops down and you will have access to the lower zerk fitting and the cable way to the top of the helm. There is another on the rudder end of the pitman arm which you may be able to reach from the rear berth with the cover removed. Other wise go through the lazerette., And while you are at it you can do the rudder post ones - one inside the helm seat and the other at the base of the rudder shaft. Hope this helps, If you have further questions give me a shout - George 937-478-7189. S/V Delicia.
