IP38 Raymarine Drive unit was created by markrodger
I have a Raymarine ST7000 Autopilot system fitted to my 1992 IP38. I do not have access to the boat at the moment but I am considering upgrading to a newer Raymarine system. I need to know the type of drive fitted, I think it is a type 1. Can anyone confirm this.

Thanks in advance
Mark

Mark:

Most IPs have a Linear drive pilot and the Type 1 is for boats with displacements up to 24,000 lbs. So with your IP38 at 21,500 lbs, this would work. We have a Type one drive from B&G on our IP35 and it is great.

Here is the reference at Raymarine.

Mark,

My IP 40, was commissioned in 1995 with an ST7000 and a Type 2 short linear drive - This is the correct linear drive for the displacement of a 40. While the IP 40 design displacement is 22k, it weighs 28k empty. I had it weighed. I imagine that it is 32-35k with a full load, water, fuel, dink, motor spares, raft, booze etc. So..... I suspect your IP 38 has the same optimistic weight problem and when loaded it will be closer to 32k. The Type 1 and Type 2 have the same physical dimensions but different capacities and power requirements. BTW, my IP 350 had a design weight was 16k. Just for grins I computed the weight by assuming that IP hit the design number and then added weight for full tanks, all equipment, spares, davit, dink & motor, jerry cans, electronics, watermaker, crew of two, food, tools, ground tackle, etc. I did this pretty carefully and was really surprised when I got a full up weight of 24k. It had a Type 1 drive. I think that we maybe able to cheat a little on drive size because the full keel tracks so well. A fin keel, spade rudder boat might demand a lot more from the drive and autopilot power amplifiers.

On many older IP's with the steering shaft directly attached to the quadrant, used a chain and sprocket arrangement with a Raymarine drive motor - I have no idea what its specs are.

I would really be interested in what others have found a bout IP full up weights.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the post. I have purchased a new Raymarine Evolution 400 system which is rated for the type 2 linear drive and this will be fitted in the Spring. I will post an update on how the installation goes and how the system performs.

Thanks again
