1st time with AC/heat on a boat. was created by jmffmj
OK! This is a very stupid question but I've never had a boat with AC or heat. The AC is reverse cycle. Does it only work when connected to shore power?
How does the heat work? Told ya it was a dumb question. I hate not knowing exactly how something works so any advice to this novice is appreciated.
I just bought an IP 32 about 25 years old. I've sailed everything from a 24' shark to a 30' catalina in the past 30 years in the Northeast and Lake Champlain so never needed AC and when it got cold the boat was already on the hard so didn't need heat either. Moving to Norfolk VA and feeling the summer heat/humidity convinced me that I needed AC for sure.

No stupid question, no worries.

AC/Heat was the first install we added on our IP35. We boat in the Chesapeake and the AC made the boat wonderful for the hot humid summers. Yes, AC/Heat needs to be used at the dock when plugged in. You can run AC/Heat also if you have a generator, but our boats the 32 and 35 are rather small for a genset. In 2001-2002 when I commissioned our IP35, I published a lot of photos about the installs. Look over my AC/Heat photos here and it may help you.

As for how these units work, they use sea water via a thru hull to a 110 volt ac water pump, this pushes water through the condenser where the compressor runs a closed loop of coolant exchanging the heat to the sea water. The sea water then discharges over the side via an above thru hull. Many of these units are installed behind the settee seat back cushion with the main air duct coming up into the saloon and then a duct to the bow and one to the stern.

A/C at anchor was a must for my wife so I installed a Next Gen 3500 diesel gen set with sound enclosure below deck in the port side locker - tight but very well worth the trouble. We burn about .2gal /hr with A/c and battery charger running. If anyone is interested, I can send pictures and details of the install. Also, next gen is located in Jacksonville, so you can drive to their factory and avoid shipping charges. Thanks, Felix and Jo aboard s/v Evergreen, IP31

I was in the same situation. Bought an IP380 with AirCon. Totally unnecessary in the dry summers in the Med. Never really used it so far. The reverse cycle (heat) is not really helpful. It runs very inefficiently and the heat should come into to cabin low, whereas the cool air from the AirCon should come in high (cold air does sink). So the air channel piping (exits) cannot serve both purposes.

These reasons are forcing me to install a proper heating system, totally independent from the AirCon installation. Webasto diesel heating is very efficient and more quiet than the AirCon unit. Also, it can be run without any shore power or inefficient and loud generator.

I plan to do the installation next spring by myself.
