IP31 Air Conditioner

Is there a good place to install a mermaid air conditioner on a IP31? any details of an installation? intake thru hull? outlet? where to run electric, ducting?

The most commonplace, and a very good place, is the starboard rearmost settee locker.

i will check out that space for the AC- looks good for electric and water inlet and outlet, and ductwork.

Here is what I have. Note that I have removed the "Y" valve and plumbing as well as an old through hull for a sounder.

What did you find out about the Bobstay crack? That worries me.

I measure the locker as follows; opening is 9.5" by 15.5", the height at the opening runs 13.5" to 11" width is 22" and length is at least 36" .

i have a fiberglass guy coming to look at it tomorrow- to me it didn't look like structural issue. i will have to see what the estimate is all the fiberglass work and what the owner is willing to pay.

I don't think the AC will fit in the area settee- i have seen an AC unit installed in the starboard cockpit locker.

Unfortunately. None that would allow installation without some fiberglass work. We ended up buying a cabin top unit that I take off and on. Sits over the salon hatch. We can do day sails with it. I leave it in position and tie it securely to the handrails. Of course it only works with shore power.

Ours is located in the locker underneath the V-berth.

I installed a domestic marine. ECD 16000 BTU under the galley sink. With the raw water pump under the port settee.

I have a drop in cruisaire Portable AC unit which suits me fine as someone new to AC on a boat. However, how do you install it in Thanks! Hatch so that water doesn’t leak through to cabin after every solid rain.

I assumed the fabric hood is somehow supposed to prevent this but I have yet to figure it out. Any help/suggestions to fix leaks (I’m talking MAJOR) earns you my first-born.

A previous owner similiarly installed a MarineAir unit under the galley sink. I miss the storage space.

I am just finishing up the install of a Mermaid 9000btu cool only unit and I put it in the aft most settee back on the port side just in front of the galley sink. Ducting run from there two two 4" outlets in the salon and one 4" in the V berth all on the port side. The install took quite a bit of planning to make sure the unit would fit. The only snags I ran into were 1. running the electrical hook up to the main 110 board on the starboard side and the return air space in front of the condensing coil. Per the install book I need three inches of space in front of this and only had 1>5 to 2 inches. This required a modification to the seat back and cushion that covers this space.

I hadvea drop in cruisair 4500 btu unit and it kept the cabin comfortable, but was a bear to move up and down , not as easy as it was 10 years ago, and as you mentioned the canvas really didn't keep out rain. I treated the canvas to make it more water repellent and that helped along with running a small line around its base and snugging that up between the hatch and the canvas. However if I had kept the unit, it is for sale, I would have fashioned a small rectangle of sunbrella to match the canvas on the boat and put some grommets in the corners and tied it down to the hand rails on the cabin top with some supports to keep it off the top of the unit which is where the compressor cooling vents are found.

To get the M-9000 in the space I had to enlarge the opening. I used the seat locker directly below this for the thru hull, strainer and pump. I mounted the electrical control box for the unit in the pots and pans storage directly next to the sink but on the outboard side of this area. To make sure I had enough return air I cut away the forward side of this storage area in the seat back area and also the smaller area below the base of the pots and pans storage area. I then put stainless steel wire mesh, 1/4" square to cover the cut out openings so that air would still flow and the pots and pans could still be stored there. I am going to put a water barrier in front and along the sides of the control box much like a small shower curtain to make certain no water drips splashes onto the control box. The only thing left is to insulate with reflectix the last couple of ducts in the main cabin behind the settee back storage area and support the duct up.

As I mentioned the electrical run was the other issue and I had hoped to go from the panel to the port side by going under the sole of the cabing thru opening where the main raw water valve is. Although I was able to get a snake thru when I exchanged that for a small diameter piece of line to pull thru the cable it ran into some issues I couldn't see and with that I made the decision to run a through the engine compartment to the port side lazarette and then up to where the 110 line for the outlets goes in the small over the stove storage to where the electrical box would be located. Certainly used more wire than I had anticipated but the previous mentioned problem made that a necessity.
