Lofrans Tigres Windlass, Service? was created by hayden
Has anyone ever serviced the lofrans tigres windlass? The dealer at the Annapolis MD Boatshow said all that is needed is to remove the chain gypsy, clean it, grease it and replace it. When asking about the oil, he said: "Did it leak out?" no, "Then don't worry about it!"

This windlass is a real workhorse (Thank you NORM P.) and I would buy one again, but it seems like there should be more I should do. Anyone ever service theirs?
Thanks.

Can:

Here are some photos of the install when I switched out the SL1000 for the Tigres. This has been a fantastic windlass, and I would buy this same unit again.

The Simpson-Lawrence Sprint 1500 vertical windlass on my IP-380 (2000) froze up and I will be pulling the motor today to assess options. Assume the problem is the motor, but I've not been able to locate information on servicing the gears/bearings which might be frozen due to lack of routine maintenance. Any suggestions on dealing with this problem would be appreciated.

If I go the route of a replacement, I assume a Imtra Tigres is still highly recommended. Are used, rebuilt Tigres available? Thanks.

Bob:

Your Simpson Lawrence 1500 windlass may need new brushes. This is not difficult to do. The motor comes right off and the case comes off to access the brushes and to blow out the carbon dust. If this is not the problem, then you might have a bent motor shaft, but I doubt that.

Yes, to me, the Lofrans Tigress is the best windlass ever made. It is fantastic.

As for SL brushes, of course they are proprietary designs by SL, so you will need to order a set of brushes from them at a very expensive price, like 150+$

Here is my photo essay of when I fixed my Simpson Lawrence 1000 by making my own set of brushes, after this ran for about a year, I bought the proper brushes and sold the windlass with the new brush kit.

Hayden,
Thanks for the information and quick reply. I'm in the process of cleaning and lubricanting the windlass gears and bearings, and checking the motor. Especially appreciate the info on the brushes. Will send an update when finished so others can benefit from my experience. The IPYOA website is a fantastic resource.

I've enclosed a manual with the parts breakdown. I've rebuilt mine a couple of years ago using that and replaced the motor a couple of years before that. My last problem was with the third compound gear which caused the unit to lock up, but only on retrieval. Not sure if your symptoms are similar.

I've got my Sprint 1500 windless mostly disassembled except for removing the motor from the gear case #40 in the manual. Does the gear #54 in the manual, remain on the shaft when the motor is removed from the gear case? Is bolt #56 the only fastener that holds the motor to the windlass housing? I've been soaking the gears in the gear case in degreasing agent overnight and tapping gear #54 but it won't budge. Anyone with experience/suggestions can also call me at 770-934-5771. Thanks.

The motor pinion gear (#44 in the drawing I have) stays with the motor. You can remove it and put it on the new motor if you are changing motors. There are four bolts (#56) that hold the motor to the gear case. If you've removed all four of them but the motor still won't separate easily from the gear case, I would not try tapping on the pinion gear or you could damage the gear or motor. Rather see if you can use a screwdriver or something sharp to pry the motor and case apart where they join. You may have to work your way around the circumference to separate them. Corrosion or sealant are probably holding the motor to the gear case. As I recall they fit together pretty snugly even when all cleaned up.

My Spirit 1500 windlass is up and running again, after cleaning and re-greasing. Seems the problem was ~7years of no servicing, as the gearbox was full of hardened dirt, etc., locking the gears and causing the breaker to trip. It took two days of soaking with de-greaser and solvents to loosen the gears so they could be removed and cleaned. The motor brushes looked ok, and I plan on carrying a new set of brushes, or a replacement motor in my spares inventory. Thanks for the suggestions resolving this problem.

Directions for servicing a Tigres windlass can be found at oceannavigator.com, under servicing your electric windlass (Dec 22, 2010 post). Directions indicate that unit must be removed and inverted to drain oil as there no drain hole. Hope this is helpful.

Bob:
I have pumped the gear oil out of the Lofrans Tigress and once I removed the motor and then ALL the gear oil drained out. That was not fun. I have never removed it once it was bolted down. It does use gear oil and it has s sight glass in the front. It was not easy to pump it out as the tube going into the gear box would catch up on the gears. Since it is gear oil, I have not really worried about changing it out.
Hayden....who thinks this is the #1 windlass...
