IP 35 Anchor Chain Ramp

IP 35 Anchor Chain Ramp was created by hayden
We originally had a vertical windlass, SL1000, and now we have a horizontal, Tigress Lofrans, and both of these have worked very well with our chain ramp to drop and deliver the anchor chain into the chain locker. On the IP35, this deep point of the chain locker is well aft of where the chain comes into the locker, so a ramp is needed. We added this ramp using starboard and a side guide to keep it on the ramp. The ramp measures: 30" long, 10" wide and it drops 15" from top to bottom. The ramp ends right over the deepest point.

Here are some photos of the ramp, NOTE: This is while on anchor with 100' deployed, so 100+ feet remain in this locker. We carry 250' 5/16" ht chain with about 40' of the end in the second locker bottom.

Overview of ramp

Drop of ramp with chain on ramp, this never backs up, and if it does, it will fall on its own.

Hayden,
Nice photos. I wanted a ramp and was not sure what slope would work. I didn't want to commit fully, so rather than epoxy supports, I filled in under the ramp with "sealed air" packing material to support it. My ramp is 6 x 30 starboard, and therefore lower, and less drop. It didn't work (castled and tumbled), and I haven't returned to the drawing board. Maybe I'll try wider, higher, and more drop as with yours. Thanks for the specs!

Hayden,

My chain locker looks a little different than yours. I have a divider runs from just aft of the stay sail turnbuckle up to the deck. Might have been added by a previous owner. When you say it drops 15" is that over the 30" run or the aft end is 15" below the deck. Also couldn't tell for sure, is it tilted from starboard to port or level. Any idea on the angle. I used 20 degrees and it is apparently not enough.

Thanks,
Bob

Yes, the 15" drop is over the length of the 30" board. I did not measure how far down from the deck it is.
