My IP420 hull #79, Galatea, has been out of US 110V waters for 5 years. In Tahiti, my first 220 V port of call, I bought a step-down transformer, but other than in Tahiti and Fiji, it brings the voltage in above the top end threshold for my Xantrex Prosine 3000 charger. I have been getting by with my solar power, but would like to rectify the situation. The Xantrex inverter works fine and I would continue to use it.
I am thinking of ditching the transformer and the Xantrex charger and getting a stand alone charger, like a Victron Phoenix 12/50, that can handle 90-260V AC input and both 50-60 Hz.
I am thinking that I would swap out one of the two Marinco 110V/30A shorepower hookups currently installed at Galatea's transom with a 240V capable hookup. I would purchase a separate shorepower cable for use with the new 240V hookup.
Questions:
- Has anyone had experience with Victron chargers - Phoenix or Centaur?
- Would I be able to reroute the existing power supply cabling that runs to the Xantrex charger from the existing 2nd 110V/30A (soon to be new 240V) hookup, to the new charger instead, or would I need to get heavier gauge wiring because it is now carrying 240 volts?
