Steering System was created by GB
Hello,
We are doing a small refit on our  "new" 1999 IP350 named Duribanki.
After installing the new chainplates we are now dealing with the steering system among other things.
We noticed 2 things:
1-    When the rudder is in the center the wheel is not.
This implies that the rudder can move a few degrees more to one side than the other.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix the problem?

2- The rudder rubs against the shoe (support bar) as if the rudder has dropped a few millimetres.
Could anyone tell me how to fix this?

Many Thanks for your support.

Simply center the rudder, visually by looking over the stern or in the boat yard, then mark your wheel where center is.

As for your rudder rubbing the shoe, that does sound like the rudder has dropped a bit.

Hi Giuseppe

I am currently in contact with Jerry at IP with regards to the stainless steel quality (AISI 304, 304L and 316L) used for the chainplates.
In 1998/99 the new 316L material got introduced stepwise. So for boats built 1998-2000 it is unclear which chainplate quality they put in, because the 316L got mixed up with the 304L in the shelf and no records on a boat by boat basis have been kept.

My questions to you:
1) Could you see any clear signs of corrosion on the old chainplates you replaced?
2) Can you find out whether they were 304L or 316L?
3) How much does the chainplate replacement cost?
4) Can you post pictures of your old chainplates?

Thank you! Mille grazie!

Martin

Hi Martin,
Sorry for my late reply.
I Try to answer your questions:
1- Yes there was corrosion,
The aft ones were line new.
2 of 6 of the sides one broken as soon we dismounted them.
2- I’m not able to tell you wich chain plate quality has been used.
3- At the end we spent around 10k€ buying them by IP with 1,05 eur/usd.
We dismounted the furnitures by ourselves (1 week job for 2 people) and we are going to mount them in may expecting at least one week job.
We hired a professional for the fiberglass job and we helped him as much as we could.
4- I have to figure our how to post the pictures, but I will do it fir sure.

If you need more infos let me know.

Hi Giuseppe,
If you still want to center your wheel, there is a link from the arm under the helm, that connects to the steering quadrant on the rudder post. I believe you can change the length of the link by twisting it, like a turnbuckle. (you will need a wrench) Not sure of the "real" name for that link.....like a connecting rod in car steering. Hayden may know how to get to the link. Could be a bear.
